Home Hill residents were devastated this morning to find that hoons in a utility had torn up a huge area of grass at Watson’s Green overnight. The park, which is planned to be the venue for the Burdekin Australia Day Awards presentation this Wednesday evening, had been well prepared by Burdekin Shire Council staff.
The vandals, in what’s believed to be a stolen vehicle, gouged deep grooves in the grass, leaving only dark indentations in their wake.
According to a local witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the vandals struck around 8 pm last night. “We heard a racket so looked over and saw a white ute with a silver tray tearing up the grass,” the witness said.
Council staff were on clean up duty today. Burdekin Local News has requested comment from the council.
